6. Holistic Wellbeing: A Guide to True Health

Dear Mama-Yogis,

As the concepts of ‘holistic living,’ ‘sustainable living,’ and the ‘body-mind-spirit connection’ gain popularity, have you considered what they genuinely mean for you? More crucially, how might you and your family gain from adopting a holistic approach to life, and wellbeing?

Today, we will delve into the essence of holistic wellbeing, and, consistent with my overarching approach, I will offer a blend of Ayurvedic wisdom, Yogic practices, and meditative insights, complemented by contemporary coaching techniques so you can explore the power to not only restore balance and vitality in your life but also positively influence your entire family’s well-being.

So let’s dive right in!

What is Holistic Well-being? 🌱

Holistic well-being goes beyond organic foods or daily routines. It’s about being deeply connected with who you are and expressing that truth in every facet of your life. It’s about being in tune with your body, mind, and soul, and making choices that reflect your inner wisdom and values. Not only that, but it’s about seeing and respecting the totality of who you are and allowing your children to grow into their true selves.

In essence, holistic well-being is the art of connecting with and expressing your authentic self in the world. Every action becomes a manifestation of this connection—whether you’re nurturing your children, relating to yourself and others, working from home, in your job, managing your business, or engaging in community projects.

Living holistic well-being involves aligning with your personal values, understanding your individual constitution, and embracing the rhythm and guiding principles of nature. Your actions reflect the innate wisdom of life (where “ayu” means life and “veda” means wisdom). This understanding empowers you to discern what is beneficial for you at a given moment and what is not. It equips you to listen to your body, mind, emotions, and the whispers of your soul, following the intelligence that maintains your health and balance, even in moments of imbalance.

For me, holistic well-being means recognizing and respecting the totality of who you are, not just a fragment of yourself. This awareness extends to others, particularly your children, who shape you rather than being molded into mini versions of yourself. It involves understanding your body’s needs and educating and nourishing yourself and your family to promote health and well-being, rather than stress and arguments.

Living holistically translates to harmonizing with nature. As you are not merely a part of nature but nature itself, it necessitates studying, respecting, and living in alignment with the principles and laws of nature rather than against them. It calls for following your inner voice, resonating with your higher intelligence and the wisdom within. This entails following teachings and practices that illuminate every facet of your being—physically, mentally, emotionally, and on the energetic soul-level.

A Holistic Approach to Motherhood

As a mother, you are the heart of your family, and it’s essential to remember that your well-being is the wellspring from which your family draws its strength. It’s easy to become lost in the selflessness of motherhood, but true love and care begin with nurturing yourself. Embrace the full spectrum of who you are as a woman, and in doing so, you’ll find that you can give even more to those you love.

Holistic well-being is the compass guiding us to the life we want without disconnecting from our true selves on the altar of self-sacrifice.

On the contrary, living all that we are wholeheartedly enables us to radiate that harmony to our loved ones and also to our work and businesses. Giving and working becomes an act of abundance and joy, not driven by guilt or a sense of fear or lack.

Holistic Well-being: Beyond the Checklist

In our quest for well-being, it’s common to envision a specific destination—a state of being, financial balance, an ideal partner, dream job, or the perfect home. Yet, much like happiness, this journey is a perpetual evolution, a continuous cycle of growth and transformation.

Holistic Wellbeing is not merely about checking off this list; it is crucial to understand and consider it as a foundation, yet the journey doesn’t end there.

Your Checklist for Holistic Well-being:

  1. [x] Optimal Nutrition🍎: Choose organic, nutrient-rich foods that nourish your body. Prioritize hydration with clean, pure water throughout the day.
  2. [x] Natural Rhythms🌅: Sync your daily activities with the cycles of nature—rise with the sun for energy, and unwind at dusk to prepare for restful sleep.
  3. [x] Self-Knowledge🧘‍♀️: Assess your Ayurvedic constitution (your ‘dosha’) to understand your natural tendencies, strengths, and areas for balance.
  4.  [x] Herbal Wisdom🌿: Incorporate herbal supplements and teas into your routine, selected for their natural healing properties that align with your constitution.
  5.  [x] Healing Diversity💆‍♀️: Explore and integrate healing practices like Reiki, massage, or acupuncture, and spiritual pursuits that resonate with your journey.
  6.  [x] Integrated Practices🤲: Develop a personalized holistic regimen that combines elements of physical, mental, and spiritual well-being tailored just for you.
  7.  [x] Conscious Living🌍: Make choices that reflect a commitment to personal well-being, social responsibility, and ecological sustainability.
  8. [x] Authentic Routines🏋️‍♀️: Establish exercise and meditation practices that feel right for you, whether it’s yoga, running, or quiet contemplation.
  9.  [x] Growth-Oriented Partnerships❤️: Engage in relationships that support mutual growth, deep connection, and shared values, nurturing love on all levels.

The essence of holistic well-being transcends a checklist.

 It’s a personalized journey of authenticity, where you need not fit into predefined roles or conform to external expectations. You don’t have to be a Yogi, martial artist, meditator, or guru—what matters most is being true to yourself.

Holistic Healing involves shedding layers of conditioning, questioning beliefs, and asking yourself, “Is this me?”

Guidance on the Journey of Holistic Wellbeing

Reflecting on Yoga’s teachings, we encounter the concept of a Guru—the remover of darkness or ignorance. Whether manifesting as a teacher, therapist, coach, or even through books and the lessons offered by life’s circumstances, the outer guru mirrors the lessons imparted by your inner guru

As you chase certain life goals—be it financial balance, an ideal partner, dream job, or perfect home—remember that, like happiness, it’s an ongoing process of evolution fueled by continual growth and transformation. 

And you don’t have to walk this path on your own! 

It is much easier, faster, and joyful to have a guide and companion with you on the journey, someone who is trained and has a lot of experience, especially when you want to incorporate the holistic tools of Ayurvedic, Yogic, and Meditation principles and practices. In fact, it is very difficult to embark on this journey by yourself, just with video or self-study courses, because you need an accountability partner as much as an experienced guide and teacher.

Your Journey Home 🏡

Embarking on this holistic journey may seem like a lofty goal, and if so, I extend my apologies. Yet, it’s not about becoming someone you think you should be; instead, it’s a journey of returning home to your authentic self. It is a journey to your true nature that doesn’t change with age or income.

Guided by your inner light and wisdom, consider seeking the support of a teacher or guide—modernly known as a coach—who has traversed the path, understanding its magic and pitfalls. It is like everything in life: If you want to learn how to swim, you would go to a swim instructor, who can swim. If you want to learn about holistic living, you go to an expert who embodies what you are seeking.

This journey is a journey of not only learning and applying new principles and tools, it is a journey of deeply getting to know yourself, and believe me, having someone on your side to support you will not only make the journey more direct and fun but will make the difference if you live the life of your dreams or not.
